DSM demonstrates how to use ICT to simultaneously meet sustainability commitments and profit objectives
Traditionally, DSM brought 400 top managers from around the world into 1 location for a major conference, incurring huge time and travel costs in the process. In 2009, DSM worked with Orange Business Services to run a telepresence virtual conference from 5 locations in 3 time zones – generating significant cost savings, reducing carbon emissions, raising productivity and improving the work / life balance of its people. Patrick Pax, Solutions Marketing Director at Orange Business Services interviews Frans Gielkens, Senior Director Global Technical Infrastructure at DSM about the company’s commitment to sustainability, how it turns words into actions and uses ICT to simultaneously meet its objectives of profit generation and sustainability. |

A “Smart“ Data Center Transformation: Addressing Today’s Business Challenges While Becoming More Sustainable
Join us as we discuss sustainable smart data center solutions topics such as:
|
Smart ICT-1 |
Modular Cooling for the Data Center
This presentation examines a new approach to data center cooling — “phase change” or “two-phase” low-pressure pumped refrigerant cooling. You will learn about the advantages of this approach over traditional Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) methods and see specific benefits organizations can realize — from lower OPEX and reduced energy requirements to optimized use of data center space. You will also discover how, through innovative design, a refrigerant-based system can be deployed with minimal impact on present infrastructure and learn about the advantages of an active refrigerant-based cooling approach over a passive energy-neutral design. |

TIA Presents: Roadmap for Sustainability of Telecommunications Equipment
Verizon has established itself as a technical leader by being the first global carrier to publish standards for energy efficiency in network equipment. This requirement, effective 1/1/09, requires a 20% reduction of energy requirements for all network equipment it purchases after this date. This presentation will focus on the process for creating these requirements and the programs for implementation as well as Verizon's latest initiatives to create a greener world. During this talk, Ludwig Graff will discuss 2 new network energy efficiency programs which will go into effect in July 2010. These programs include Thermal Management Simulation and Test (TMST) and RoHS reliability testing program |

Lessons Learned from Data Center Planning and Design Phases
Join us to learn how to design the Data Center of the Future. We will begin by explaining how we designed our new LEED Gold Certified world headquarters building, including the new data center, for energy efficiency, collaboration and innovation. Next, you will hear from the Panduit CIO on how the new Data Center was designed to support strategic IT objectives. Panduit’s Director of IT will then explain the detailed implementation plan designed to achieve these goals, the best practices implemented, and the new level of intra-organizational collaboration required to implement that Data Center strategy. This new Data Center leverages Panduit’s Unified Physical Infrastructure(UPI) based Data Center Solutions and complete portfolio of physical infrastructure offerings to reduce power and cooling costs, minimize space and increase agility while ensuring high availability, reliability and scalability. |

Tracks
Smart ICT 1 and 2
- Virtualization of ICT resources
- A major trend in controlling the overall growth in data center footprints
- Pooling assets such as computing, Network and Storage, where utilization is low, so they can be used across the enterprise and beyond
- Virtualization represents a radical rethinking of how to deliver data center services
- Virtualization could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Cooling
- ICT vendors are actively working to improve cooling technique efficiencies
- Cooling has now become a significant competitive differentiator
- Technologies and solutions are now available to detect where within the data center temperatures are running high, and to direct cooling to those areas
- Consolidation, Cloud Computing and Software as a Service (SaaS)
- There is a significant trend towards consolidation that will help in dealing with the existing or legacy data center impact.
- Organizational attitudes are changing as costs of operating a data center surpass the initial investment
- Companies now have a number of options for computing services, which shift costs from the enterprise to an external provider, who could potentially deliver these capabilities with economies of scale and at higher energy efficiency
- SaaS business model allows companies to access key enterprise applications, such as customer relationship management databases, or collaboration tools, via a web browser, with no need to host their own data center facilities
- Advanced telepresence applications, currently in the early stage of adoption, will have a significant impact in highly-distributed service industry environments, in both the private and public sectors.
Smart Grids Summit
- Smart Grids bring together two worlds: energy and ICT, in a unique setting designed to identify how they can create new opportunities and drive innovation. This event will do more than explore how energy suppliers can become more efficient in the transmission and distribution of power. Telco 2.0 has built a rich understanding of how telecoms operators and IT players are meeting the challenges and opportunities brought by disruptive internet technologies. With this event, Telco 2.0 brings this understanding to the energy industry, along with insights into the implications for existing and new players.
Telepresence & Unified Communication
- As physical travel becomes more expensive and less efficient, smart business leaders are moving toward the puck and improving their ability to connect with their partners, vendors, and customers using telepresence and videoconferencing. They are leveraging telepresence as integral part of R&D, partner collaboration, and even the sales and customer engagement process to reduce pollution, cut costs, improve productivity and aggressively accelerate their position in new markets. Creating a telepresence capability also delivers a disaster recovery capability against terrorism, war, health emergencies, and/or economic/currency collapse. Discover the ROI and benefits in connecting your company to the rest of your eco-system globally.
